VIKING FOOTBALL NEWS AND DOINGS “VFND”
Issue # 4 Greetings Viking Fans, In the next few days the school year ends and summer vacation begins. “Vacation” is a relative word for football players today as the game has evolved in to a truly year round sport even at the high school level. In Texas, at the 5-A (large school) classification there are now very few “off weeks”. As an example, our football team finished spring drills on May 19th. The next day the “7 on 7” team played in an eight game tournament going 7-1. The following Saturday the team qualified for the State Championship in July for a state record 11th consecutive year. That group will play its fourth tournament of the year this coming Saturday and school will have been out one day! Our big guys have been equally busy, competing in “big man” tournaments over the last few weeks and working towards qualifying for their own state tournament. Now all of this is in addition to their regular football periods where they run plays or lift weights on alternating days of the school week. Many of our players supplement this with personal trainers they visit 1-3 times per week. So as summer begins we need to me mindful that all players need to get some well deserved extra sleep; good food and lots of hydration. All three are necessary to keep young bodies growing and healthy. The workouts this summer are vital to the team’s success. But so are some rest and a break from the usual routine. I wear both “hats” of Dad and Coach so I need to be sure I heed my own “advice” here! Coach Ward retirement. As you know by now, Jerry Ward has decided to retire effective this Thursday. I have known Coach Ward for over ten years and can attest to the fact that he is a real gentleman; a great Teacher and Coach and a proud Grandfather! Peggy and I presented on your behalf a nice framed photo of Coach Peach and Ward (taken by Bob Thomas and framed by Marla) at the Spring Game which was their last official practice together. He was touched by the picture. I want us each to take a moment and reflect on his 38 years of service to Lamar High School. Literally thousands of student-athletes and other’s lives have been positively impacted by Coach Ward since he joined the staff when the school opened in 1970. He is very much looking forward to some quality time with his family and the grandbaby! Good luck Coach Ward and thanks from your many, many admirers. Please keep checking our web sites during
the summer for updates: The count down is on till August and our week zero kick off with Keller Fossil Ridge! Have a great summer and until next month-
