VIKING FOOTBALL NEWS AND DOINGS “VFND”                                                                              Issue # 7

Late August 2008 Edition

OK, I really need to get my calendar in sync as I am late again this month with this newsletter. Work with me; this is the busiest time of the year as we gear the Viking Club up on all fronts for the season that IS UPON US! Lot’s of good things happening so let me get right to it:

1. Thanks to Olenjack’s (please eat there as much as possible) generosity the Viking Club hosted a reception for ALL the Coaches that have been assistants at Lamar under Coach Peach these last 38 years. What a reunion: of the 46 coaches identified by Mrs. Debbie Peach; we had 33 of them make it back! The purpose of the get together was to get them individually on video tape giving a “shout out” to their friend and colleague Coach Peach (who was not invited for obvious reasons). You can imagine the range of emotions in these testimonials. These will be incorporated into the DVD that will be included in The History of Lamar Vikings Football Book that will be published just after the 2008 season. (To order go to: www.lamarlegends.com ) A group photo of the coaches in attendance is attached.
  1. I am pleased to report that Channel 21 will televise the first game against Keller Fossil Ridge on a tape delay basis at 11:00pm (check your guide for last minute changes) that same night.
  1. The first week of practice was very productive according to Coach Peach. Both the first teams looked good in the first intra squad scrimmage on August 16th.
  1. The Vikes three way scrimmage is set for Saturday August 23rd at 7:00pm at Cravens Field. The 9th grade plays at 9:00 am (subject to change so check with the 9th grade coaches); JV at 5:00pm. All three scrimmages are at Cravens against O.D. Wyatt and Dunbar.
  1. The Varsity Retreat was a real success! JJ Joe, former Lamar and Baylor QB was the moderator and helped the players put their season goals in writing. After this was accomplished the players were led to Cravens where the lights were turned on. Standing in the end zones were past players Rick Turner (1975); Ryan Lyons (1988) Joe and Tomicus Walker (19993; 1996) and Justin and Ben Poynter (2000; 2002) to talk to the players about what it meant to be a Lamar Viking in their respective decade. The players then exited the field with “Eye of the Tiger” blaring through the PA System courtesy of the “voice of Lamar football” Jay Ryan.
  1. Viking Fest is next Wednesday August 27th from 7:00-9:00pm. Great chance to join the Viking Club, buy those Lamar caps, t-shirts etc. and to buy a History of Lamar Vikings Football book.
